Protecting Children Together: A Message for Parents & Guardians
At the Carlisle Family YMCA, your child’s safety is our top priority. We believe in partnering with parents and guardians to prevent abuse and build strong, trusting relationships. Below are some important ways you can help keep children safe:
How to Help Protect Your Child from Abuse
- Teach your child about personal boundaries and the right to say “no.”
- Encourage open, honest conversations about their day-to-day experiences.
- Monitor your child’s interactions—both in person and online.
- Stay involved in their activities and maintain regular communication with staff and volunteers.
Warning Signs of Possible Abuse
- Sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, aggression or anxiety.
- Fear of certain places or people.
- Unexplained injuries or changes in hygiene.
- Talking about secret interactions or being told to “keep secrets.”
How to Respond if a Child Shares a Concern
- Stay calm and listen without judgment.
- Thank them for telling you—it takes courage to speak up.
- Avoid asking too many questions; let them share what they are comfortable sharing.
- Report the concern to the proper authorities and to YMCA staff immediately.
