Y Talk: Combatting Nature Deficit Disorder by Brittany Rose

In my recent reading in Parent Magazine I came across an article called, “Raise a Nature Lover.” I never thought of parents having to think about their kids not wanting to go outside, especially on nice days. Maybe it was our location, but growing up for me and living in a neighborhood with kids somewhat close to my age, going outside was just what we did. On nice days we would run home, drop our book bags on the floor and race to see who would be the first one back outside (usually with a snack hanging out of our mouth).

As Camping Services Director here at the Y and as a parent, it’s sort of scary to me to think that nature isn’t part of the daily routine for students of all ages, or for younger adults and parents as well. There seems to be this rush to get home, drop everything and then … pull out the iPad, the phone, login to social media or turn on the TV and want to shut down for the day (minus a small break to eat dinner together).

Reading more into the article it stated, “Kids are spending about seven hours with technology, and 15 minutes or less outside in nature. Coining a new term: Nature deficit disorder.”

So, even if you aren’t a camp family, stop and think about the benefits of being outside for your family and kids when making those summer plans:

  • It gets us outside.
  • It builds confidence.
  • It promotes creativity and imagination.
  • It teaches responsibility.
  • It provides different stimulation than “technology.” Nature may seem less stimulating than your son’s violent video game, but in reality, it activates more senses—you can see, hear, smell and touch outdoor environments.
  • It gets kids moving.
  • It makes them think.
  • It reduces stress and fatigue.

And if you are looking for a great place for your kids to spend time outdoors, check out our day and resident camp options here at the Carlisle Family YMCA! Registration is now open for all of our camps for Y members. Non-members can begin to register March 15. Register today and give your kids a summer they will never forget!
